How to Start an Art Habit (Even if You’re Not an Artist)
How to Start an Art Habit (Even if You’re Not an Artist)
Let’s clear something up right away:
You don’t need to be “good” at art to start making it.
You don’t need fancy supplies, a degree in design, or a perfectly curated workspace. You just need you, a little time, and a willingness to try.
I’m Izzy—a stay-at-home mom, full-time multitasker, and kawaii artist who creates joyful, silly, feel-good art. And believe me, I didn’t always have a creative routine. It took baby steps, naps, late-night sketches, and a lot of erasing. But now? Art is a part of my daily rhythm—and it makes my life better.
Here’s how you can start your own art habit—even if you’ve never drawn more than a stick figure.
1. Let Go of the “Artist” Label
You don’t need to call yourself an artist to make art.
You’re a creator when you create. That’s it.
This mindset shift takes off the pressure. You’re not trying to impress anyone. You’re just showing up for yourself.
2. Start With 5–10 Minutes a Day
The biggest myth about creativity? That you need a lot of time.
Truth: You only need a little.
Set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes and:
Doodle how your day felt
Trace a cute Pinterest sketch
Color in a free printable (I’ve got some if you need!)
Those few minutes count—and they build momentum.
3. Keep It Visible and Easy
Put your art supplies where you can see them:
A sketchbook on your kitchen counter
A pencil jar next to your coffee maker
A tablet on your nightstand
When creativity is convenient, it becomes a habit faster.
4. Use Prompts or Challenges
Stuck on what to draw? Prompts save the day!
Try:
“Draw your mood as a dessert”
“Kawaii-ify your favorite snack”
“One-line doodle challenge”
Pinterest and ChatGPT are full of daily prompt ideas—and they’re free!
5. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
Don’t focus on being “better.” Focus on returning.
Every time you show up for your creative self, you’re building something powerful: trust, joy, and confidence.
It doesn’t matter if the art is messy, silly, or unfinished—it matters that you made space for it.
Here’s the Truth:
Everyone is creative.
Even if you haven’t picked up a pencil in years.
Even if you think you’re “not good at art.”
Even if life is chaotic and your time is limited.
You can start an art habit—and it can start today.
