How to Create Without Comparing Yourself to Other Artists
How to Create Without Comparing Yourself to Other Artists
Let’s be honest—we’ve all done it.
You open Instagram or Pinterest just to scroll for inspiration… and suddenly you’re spiraling. That artist’s style is amazing. Their colors are perfect. Their shop has a million sales. Their video just went viral.
And there you are—wondering if your art is even worth posting at all.
Comparison is a creativity killer.
But the truth is, you don’t have to create like anyone else to be successful, happy, or fulfilled as an artist.
Here’s how to create without comparing yourself—and get back to making art that actually feels good.
1. Remember: There’s Room for Everyone
Your voice, your style, your story—it’s all uniquely yours.
Even if you draw the same theme as someone else (like a coffee cup, a cat, or a rainbow), it will still look different because you made it.
The world doesn’t need just one kind of art. It needs yours, too.
2. Turn Envy Into Inspiration
It’s okay to admire other artists. In fact, that’s healthy! But instead of feeling discouraged, ask yourself:
What do I like about their work?
What energy does it give me?
How can I let that inspire—not define—my next piece?
Use their art as a spark, not a measuring stick.
3. Limit the Scroll (When Needed)
If you notice you’re starting to feel anxious or not good enough, it’s okay to take a break from the feed.
Instead:
Open your sketchbook and doodle just for you
Look at your own past art to see how far you’ve come
Go outside, listen to music, or journal ideas from your own world
You don’t need to be constantly online to stay creative. Sometimes your best inspiration comes offline.
4. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
The artist you’re comparing yourself to?
They’ve probably been drawing for years. You’re seeing their highlight reel—not their practice, mistakes, or learning curves.
So instead of comparing your beginning to someone else’s middle, focus on:
What you’ve improved
What you’ve created lately
How your style is evolving
Every sketch counts. Every line teaches you something. That is success.
5. Keep a “Me Folder”
This is one of my favorite tricks:
Make a digital (or real!) folder of your own art you’re proud of.
Add:
Favorite drawings
Kind comments from others
Things you made when you felt joyful or brave
Look at it when you forget how amazing you already are.
6. Your Art Is Enough—Because You Made It
You don’t have to be “the best.” You don’t have to go viral.
You just have to keep creating with love, honesty, and curiosity.
That’s what people connect with. That’s what matters.
So the next time you feel that comparison creeping in, come back to this:
You’re not falling behind. You’re just on your own beautiful path.
